In January, fitness centers and gyms everywhere are packed with motivated people determined to lose weight, get toned, and try the latest trends in the world of fitness. Goals are set. Memberships are purchased. But what about those of us moms who aspire to work on our fitness in 2017, but don’t want to spend the extra $120+ per month on a membership?
Thanks to YouTube, you can explore the hottest fitness trends from the comfort of your basement or family room. And best of all, these workouts require only a 5-pound set of weights, a mat, and a chair. Extra bonus: no trendy workout outfit required.
Fitness Trend #1: Barre
Barre is a phenomena that has exploded across the country. These ballet-inspired classes essentially mix elements of Pilates, dance, yoga, and strength training, and the moves are choreographed to motivating music.
Your FREE barre fitness option: Brittany Bendall’s YouTube Barre Workouts
Brittany might look sweet, but her intense workouts will leave your muscles quivering. Whether you have 10 minutes or 60, her classes are effective, challenging, and fun. The only downside is her choice of background music. You may want to blast your own workout playlist instead. Currently pregnant? Brittany has fantastic prenatal barre workouts, too.
Fitness Trend #2: HIIT
HITT, or high-intensity interval training, is a training technique in which you give one hundred percent effort through intense bursts of exercise, followed by short recovery periods. This type of training gets and keeps your heart rate up and burns more fat in less time. Think burpees and jump squats. Studios and gyms everywhere are serving up HIIT classes that boast the calorie-scorching benefits of this type of training.
Your FREE HIIT fitness option: Fitness Blender HIIT Workouts
Featuring personal trainers Daniel and Kelli (a husband and wife team), these workouts are done by 35 million people each month. Workouts range from 10-85 minutes. You can access their free videos on the Fitness Blender website, and many of their HIIT workouts are on YouTube as well. Daniel and Kelli are relatable, real people who aren’t afraid to let you see them huff, puff, and sweat while doing challenging intervals. They don’t provide background music, so you’ll want to have your own workout playlist ready to go before starting a video.
Fitness Trend #3: Dance
Dance workouts have been popular since the 80’s and have continued to evolve since then. From Zumba to hip-hop, these classes make working out seem like less of a chore and more of a party.
Your FREE dance fitness option: PopSugar Cardio Dance Workouts
PopSugar dance workouts feature a variety of different instructors and range from 20-30 minutes. If dancing is your idea of a good time, you’re going to love these. You’ll burn calories AND have fun. Want some laughs? Have your kids join you and make it a family event.
Here’s to a healthy and happy 2017!
